I walked into our home and noticed something dramtically different. Sure, there was insulation being blown in and some drywalls being put up, but that wasn't it. It was the heat--the warmth and comfort inside was a dramatic change from the usual cold all winter long in the house. It was just incredible! The Geothermal units were up and running and you couldn't hear a thing. Here's the one on the second floor. It was so quiet! I had no idea it was even running.
Our home is mostly solid concerete, but there are parts that are made with traditional frame. And for those parts, we have heavy-duty insulation to make sure that they match the R-value of the rest of the home. Blown in insulation is so weird looking but you relly get the sense that it works.
Our roof access (aka "penthouse") isn't even a room but it's now become my favorite space in the house. It's flooded with light and has this amazing view of the skyline. Check it out. This picture doesn't even begin to do that view justice.
This blog details some of our personal ups and downs with building our home in Logan Square neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois and now living in it. Our home is an environmentally friendly, energy efficient house that is registered with LEED for Homes and Chicago Green Homes.
